What is green cleaning?
Green cleaning is cleaning that is better for the environment than most of the harsh chemicals that have been on the market for years. Many of the household names that our parents have grown up with and we have become accustomed to are hazardous to our health and the environment. But, just because a cleaning product says it is green on the label does not mean it is safe to be used in the home.
Recent studies say that about 13% of the US population are chemically sensitive, meaning they suffer from skin conditions and asthma when in contact with chemical cleaning supplies and artificial air fresheners. It is also noted that cleaners who work for cleaning companies that use these chemical cleaning products have a higher rate of asthma than the general population.
Companies who supply these cleaning chemicals are aware of these issues and now try to sell the concept of green cleaning as being good for the environment and safer for your family and pets.
Unfortunately, most companies are playing with this trend and using it to their advantage to sell a greener, safer solution at often times a higher price, but studies find the majority of the green cleaning products on the market are just as bad as their chemical counterparts. Putting a toxic substance in a green bottle and putting green in the name because it has one “green” ingredient does nothing for the safety and health of you or the cleaning staff who come to clean your home.
Enter, eco friendly…
What does eco-friendly mean?
Well, Eco is an abbreviation for ecology, the system of relationships between living things, and with their environment. Friendly implies beneficial, or at least not harmful. It should follow that the term eco-friendly, when added to services or products, indicates positive, or at least not harmful, effects on living things.
So, when it comes to cleaning, eco-friendly cleaning products are not harmful to your family or pets. Green cleaning does not mean not harmful, therefore, just because a cleaning company claims to be green does not mean it is safe for your family or pets.
Unfortunately, there are common myths and misconceptions about both terms and both have come to mean safer for the family, but eco-friendly is really the only kind of cleaning that is safe.
Cleaning has come a long way from the cloths or rags (in the south) of old and those pieces of material are being replaced by scientifically tested microfiber cloths that have been proven and tested to clean better with just water than cloths and bleach can. Much of this is due to the fact that cloths don’t actually pick up the dirt, they just push it around. Microfiber cloth are much better at cleaning at a micro level and pick up and trap dirt, germs and bacteria at a microscopic level and trap it in the cloth until rinsed under running water.
The cloths have been getting better and better each year as science permits, but the leaders in the field are E-cloth (which we use) and Norwex, which is sold in an MLM/Direct selling model.
There are now cloths for each individual cleaning task from tough jobs to gentle polishing and dusting. Science has reduced the need for harmful chemicals and it is now safer for you, the customer and our cleaning staff.
